1. What to see in different seasons?

Scenery and water level of the Yangtze change due to different seasons. April, May, September and October (spring and autumn) is the high season for the Yangtze cruise because of comfortable weather and higher water level for smoother cruise experience. But the price is usually higher with larger quantity of travelers. Summer months (June, July and August) are hot with much sunshine and forest-covered gorges. And during the cold winter months (December, January and February), the Three Gorges (the most impressive section of the Yangtze River) will be loftier and more breathtaking to witness because of the much lower water level in winter. Winter also enjoys the best price of year. And the red leaves along the gorges are a great bonus of the winter cruise, too.

2. Upstream and downstream cruise

Downstream means sailing from higher part of the river to the lower part of the river, eg, Chongqing-Yichang, Chongqing-Shanghai

Upstream means sailing from lower part of river to the up to the higher part of the river, eg, Yichang-Chongqing, Shanghai-Chongqing.

Downstream:

Advantages:
1. Faster speed & shorter time needed. Sailing at the speed of 29 kph (18 mph) compared to an average of 16 kph (10 mph) of upstream cruise.
2. Ships don’t sail at night.
3. Lower price sometimes. For the Victoria Cruises running between Chongqing and Yichang, and Victoria Prince running between Chongqing and Shanghai, it costs about 10% lower than the upstream.

Disadvantage:
1. Less time to appreciate the scenic spots along the river carefully.
2. Less time onboard for leisure activities, Chinese folk customs, etc.

Upstream:

Advantages:
1. Slower speed. The average speed of an upstream cruise is 16 kph (10 mph) compared to 29 kph (18 mph) for downstream cruises. It allows tourists to have enough time for sightseeing and photography.
2. More time onboard for leisure activities, Chinese folk customs, etc.

Disadvantages:
1. Longer time needed.
2. Travelling at night. Due to the slower speed, cruise ships travelling upstream have to travel at night in order to reach shore excursion destinations and scenic attractions in daylight hours.
3. Higher price sometimes. For the Victoria Cruises running between Chongqing and Yichang, and Victoria Prince running between Chongqing and Shanghai, it costs about 10% higher than the downstream.

4. How to choose a cruise cabin?

Choosing a cabin that fits you is very important for a perfect Yangtze cruise. It is a personal decision based on your budget and lifestyle. There are basically 3 essential factors to consider when making a decision: the ship’s star rating, cabin types and cabin locations.

Star Rating of Cruise Ships
As we all know, the higher the star rating of ships is, the better cabins the ships are equipped with. With high star rating ships, the cabins onboard must have better wooden furniture, softer beds and high-quality baths. Generally, there are five-star and four-star deluxe ships for foreign travelers. Read more Yangtze cruise ships cabin info.

Cabin Types
Generally, the cabin types include: standard cabins, junior cabins, deluxe suites and supreme deluxe suite (including the Shangri-la suites on Victoria Cruise, President Suites on President Cruise).

Cabin Locations: Higher Deck Cabins

Advantages:
1. It is much closer to sun deck and all the entertainment areas, such as bard, card rooms, reading rooms, internet bars and spas.
2. Besides, you can get better sightseeing.

Disadvantages:
1. It is further from the dining rooms and reception.
2. You may experience more rocking motion up high, so those who are seasick prone might want to avoid a higher deck cabin. Seasickness happens less during a Yangtze cruise than that on an ocean cruise.

Lower Deck Cabins

Advantages:
1. It is much closer to dining rooms and reception.
2. You will experience a smoother ride than those in higher deck cabins.

Disadvantages:
1. It is further from the sun deck and all the entertainment areas.

    2. Sightseeing is more limited than from higher deck cabins.
