Day 1 Arrive in Datong - Free time

Today's Activities

Arrive in Datong Railway Station or reach Datong Airport. We pick you up and escort you to the comfortable hotel in downtown Datong. Have a good rest there and store energy for tomorrow's thrilling tour.

Day 2 Hanging Temple - Nine-Dragon Screen - Yungang Caves (Breakfast, lunch)

Today's Activities

Today is a thorough feast of Datong attractions. The big three, Hanging Temple, Nine-Dragon Screen and Yungang Caves come together to show you what an incredible level human intelligence can get. Temples are here and there in Shanxi, yet Hanging Temple never fails to top the list of must-see local temples. Drive 70 km and look down on the cliff to which the wooden temple fast fastens itself, you would feel a little bit shake with fear！End the 1-hour tour and drive back to the downtown Datong to have your lunch, then we escort you to the biggest Nine-Dragon Screen around China. The vivid dragons would pull you closer to the concept that Chinese guys regard the dragon as the symbol of the highest power and grandeur. The most attractive comes at last. Yungang Caves will glue your eyes with 252 grottoes and over 51,000 Buddhist statues.

Today's Activities

It takes 4 hours to reach Pingyao from Datong by car, yet traditional Chinese art of architecture and sculpture can't wait to boast itself even before you enter Pingyao Ancient City. Qiao Family Compound and Shuanglin Temple at the outskirt are what Pingyao locals feel proud of. Distinguished architectural fashion of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) gets so fully displayed in the gigantic Qiao Family Compound that the complex was set as shotting place of Zhang Yimou's famous movie Raise the Red Lantern (1991). Inside Shuanglin Temple there are more than 2,000 painted Buddha sculptures waiting for your exploration. Each will be proved worthy of your 1-hour-long stay.

Afterwards, you'll arrive in Pingyao, check in at the featured hotel and spend a free happy Pingyao night. Everything that bumps into your eyes is vintage. Red lanterns, red paper cuts, opera facial makeups are so Chinese accented; sidewalk restaurants sell traditional Pingyao diet and bars playing poetic Chinese ancient music. Pingyao Ancient City is an unbelievable melting pot. Buildings inside the Ancient City Wall, though taking on the same traditional looks, stand for sharply different contents. Exchange shops at Mingqing Street are to give you an active and ambitious Shanxi Commercial Group, which once dominated economy of modern China (1840-1949). Among them is the famous Rishengchang Exchange Shop that you must visit. Astonishingly, These capitalistic banking companies lives in peace with feudal Government Office of Pingyao. Moreover, these companies have the Ancient Security Guard Company (Biaoju in Chinese) as their property supercargo. You'll find yourself amazed by such a relation and way of living together with varied minds in Pingyao!

After that, your tour of Pingyao can draw a nice period. We'll see you off at Taiyuan Airport or Pingyao Railway Station in the afternoon. Wish you a thoroughly happy journey!

Datong offers over 108 kinds of noodles and pastries. The street food menu includes Shuijianbao, the fried pork-stuffed buns and Doumianjianbao, the pancakes topped with string beans. Besides, trying a bowl of millet gruel might be a good choice after the oily meals in big cities.
