Day 1 Arrive in Pingyao - Mingqing Street- Rishengchang Shop- Ancient Government Office- Biaoju- Ancient City Wall (Lunch)

Today's Activities

Arrive in Pingyao Railway Station or reach Pingyao within 1 hour by private car that picks you up from Taiyuan Airport. Make yourself at home at the cozy lovely featured hotel in Pingyao, then beging your happy tour around Pingyao Ancient City.

Touring Pingyao Ancient City is for sure an incredible experience. The saying "Nothing gold can stay" doesn't seem to go for what you see inside the city. The Ancient City Wall still holds its position, protecting people and buildings inside from metropolis lure. The most prosperous Mingqing Street has nearly one hundred traditionally furnished shops and local houses built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) along both sides. The representative modern bank company of China, Rishengchang Exchange Shop, stands in sharp contrast with the feudal Ancient Government Office of Pingyao. The Ancient Security Guard Company (Biaoju in Chinese) used to escort transfortation of bulks of treasury out from Rishengchang with mainly cold weapons (!!)

Day 2 Shuanglin Temple - Wang Family Compound - Taiyuan (Breakfast, Lunch) (transfer by private car)

Today's Activities

Today let's stretch the exploration of Pingyao to the outskirt. Drive about 15 minutes and you have Shuanglin Temple, the treasure house of Oriental Painted Sculptures. More than 2,000 exquisite Buddha sculptures will glue your eyes. Then you would head for Wang Family Compound. The residential complex, five times as large as the more famous Qiao Family Compound, is a sea of Qing Dynasty architectural art. It's surely worthwhile your 2-hour visit. After that, your tour of Pingyao can draw a perfect period. We'll turn to another city Taiyuan by private car in the afternoon.

Day 3 Twin Towers Temple - Jinci Temple - Datong (Breakfast, Lunch) transfter by private car

Today's Activities

Go visit the symbol of Taiyuan Twin Towers Temple first. The temple, with a history of nearly 400 years, best illustrates how strong a sheer wooden structure can get. The twin towers, each of which reaches nearly 60 meters, are always the highlight of the temple. What surprise you most are the ever-blossoming peonies. They seem to last as long as the powerful towers of the temple.

The Taiyuan-version Forbidden City greets you after you finish touring Twin Towers Temple. Indeed to the eyes of Taiyuan folks, Jinci Temple is as comprehensive and sophisticated as the Beijing Forbidden City. It will meet your curiosity about traditional Chinese culture in every way possible--architecture, carving, landscape, painting, inscription and so forth. The ever-spouting Nanlao Spring, 42 maid sculptures shaped in Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and the Divine Mother sculpture are the top three attractions inside Jinci Temple.

The tour in Taiyuan is a little bit brief yet unforgetable. In the afternoon we'll reach Datong within 3 hours by private car.

Day 4 Hanging Temple - Nine-Dragon Screen - Yungang Caves (Breakfast, Lunch)

Today's Activities

Today's list is awesome! Look, UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 2001, the most dangerous-looking temple hanging from cliff and the biggest-scale Nine-Dragon Screen in China. Concretely, we'll drive to the outskirt 70 km from downtown Datong to explore Hanging Temple (1 h)after having breakfast, then back to Datong for lunch and the following masterpiece Nine-Dragon Screen (30 min). The light of human intelligence comes to the strongest when we drive 40 min to the gigantic Yungang Caves. During the 2 hours, just enjoy yourself in the sea of Buddha sculptures.

Datong offers over 108 kinds of noodles and pastries. The street food menu includes Shuijianbao, the fried pork-stuffed buns and Doumianjianbao, the pancakes topped with string beans. Besides, trying a bowl of millet gruel might be a good choice after the oily meals in big cities.

Thanks for your email. We are actually in huangshan right now! We go back to shanghai on Thursday and then return to Sydney next Monday. We have had a great time travelling in china and our trip to datong and pingyao was a highlight!
