Guangzhou, also known as Canton and Kwangchow, is the capital of Guangdong province. It is the political, economic and cultural center of South China. Canton fair, the biggest trade fair in China, is held twice a year in the city in April and October. The 16th Asian Games is also going to be held in Guangzhou in 2010.
With a history of more than 2000 years, Guangzhou is the start of "maritime silk route". From tourist resorts to historical and cultural spots, the tourist resources in Guangzhou are in the characteristic of diversification which can meet different tourists with different requirements. For enthusiasts of history and culture, Chen Clan Academy is a must see attraction; it is honored as the "Folk Art Museum"; and Guangxiao Temple, the most important ancient temple in the history of Buddhism in China; Liurong Temple, also named Six Banyan Temple is also a temple of Buddhism with 1400 years' history; if coming during the Spring festival, the flower market is one of the best attractions for tourists. In 2010, the Canton Tower (Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower), which bridges the old and new Guangzhou together, was added onto the list of Guangzhou landmarks.
For tourists who are interested in local customs, and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street are recommended to visit. Qingping market is the largest medicinal materials market and pets market; Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is a commercial pedestrian street with traditional architectures
Chimelong Paradise and Xiangjiang Safari Park are recommended to those family tourists. Xiangjiang Safari Park is the largest wild animal safari park in Asia. In spite of that, the ocean park in Guangzhou Zoo is also popular among the tourists.
Guangzhou is honored as "the paradise of food" in China. Cantonese cuisine is one of the eight cuisines in China. The typical dining with Cantonese features is Yum-cha during which you can taste lots of traditional dim-sums.
It is easy to get to other areas from Guangzhou. It takes about 90 minutes to the World Cultural Heritage - Kaiping Diaolou and Villages also known as Kaiping Watchtower Houses in Jiangmen by bus; about one and half an hour to Shiwan, which is reputed as the city of ceramic in Foshan; 2 hours from Guangzhou to Hong Kong by train and 2 hours to Macau by bus.
