The highest mountain in Chengdu, Xiling Snow Mountain is a national scenic resort which lies in Dayi county, Sichuan province. The resort is about 95 kilometers (59 miles) away from Chengdu and covers an area of 482.8 square kilometers (186 square miles). Its peak, Daxuetang, is 5364 meters (3.3 miles) high and capped with snow all year round. It was first made famous when the renowned Chinese poet Du Fu lived in seclusion on its slopes in a thatched house and penned the famous poem "the window contains the range of the century snow from Xiling, the gate anchors the ship coming from Kingdom of Wu."(窗含西岭千秋雪,门泊东吴万里船）
The entire area is a natural paradise where you can find primeval forests, sheer precipices, overhanging rock formations, and a variety of flowers, rare birds, and other animals. Spectacular alpine views lurk at every corner with streams, waterfalls, a sea of clouds, and the most beautiful sunrises. For the adventurous, there are also a number of thrill activities available such as snowboarding, skiing, motor skiing, hot-air ballooning, and gliding.

The Giant Waterfall of Gaoshan Valley is perhaps the most amazing natural site in the area. Plummeting 360 meters (1182 feet) down from the hillside of Baoque Mountain, the white water creates a thunderous sound that rocks the air and a cool shroud-like mist. The scene seems as if it was taken directly out of a poem written by Li Bai (701-762: considered to be one of China's two most famous poets along with Du Fu). On a sunny day, a rainbow forms in the waterfall's mist, creating an even more inspiring site.
The Xiling Snow Mountain ski slopes are presently China's biggest, with the best facilities, the largest slopes, and the most snow. While China isn't often considered a skiing destination, lovers of the sport will enjoy a whole new spot with great prices.
