What is acrobatics

Chinese Acrobatics is one of the oldest performing arts in China; it started from Warring States Period (475 BC-221 BC). Originally acrobatics came out people's movements for performing rigorous labor and also their self-defense skills. It is believed that the early performance is "walking on three-meter-high stilts while juggling seven gaggers". Then it developed into an entire art form.

Chinese acrobatics can also be called a national art. The basics of Chinese Acrobatic are balancing, tumbling, dancing, flexibility, and strength are taught in the first two years, and students spend the next 3-5 years perfecting specific acts. Then, they will do their first performances when they reach the age of 16 or so.

The acrobatics in Shanghai is always a highlight for visitors. There are two famous Shanghai Acrobatic Theatres. Varieties of exciting programs with countless near-impossible feats of flexibility, strength, endurance, and sheer will-power are performed on stage that will leave you completely astounded.

The Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe, usually regarded as better than the former one, is one of the best in China. An acrobatic show has become one of the most popular evening entertainments for tourists in Shanghai. You can enjoy gravity-defying contortionism, juggling, unicycling, chair-stacking, and plate-spinning acts at the following stages.

Huangpu River Sensation

Huangpu River Sensation, a production with strong Shanghai features, was presented by Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe in 2005 at Shanghai Center Theatre. The program consists of 3 parts-- "Autumn Day", "Moon Reflection" and "Rosy Clouds"-- showing the vicissitudes of Shanghai: "Grand Feast" and "Lovers at the Bund" tell the story of yesterday; "Juggler in the Bar" reflects the charm of today; "Hoop Diving" and "Magic Illusion" predicts the development of tomorrow. Some acts such as "Play Dooly", 'silk Stripes" and "Pyramid of Chairs" are the "Gold Lion Award" winners at China National Acrobatic Competitions.
