As a junction station between eastern and western China, Xi'an Railway Station is a vital part of the Chinese railway network, contecting to major destinations include Beijing (11.5 hrs), Shanghai (16 hrs), Guangzhou (22 hrs) and Chengdu (13.5 hrs). It's just 30 minutes drive to city center from the station. The station provides a number of services including a foreign friendly ticket office with English speakers. Be advised, that you will need your passport for this. However, the best alternative is to purchase travel tickets in advance, especially during peak season.

The Xi'an Xianyang International is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of downtown Xi'an in neighboring Xianyang. The airport offers 68 daily domestic flights and 25 international flights to Asia, Europe, Oceania and America and is noted for having the most international connections in Western China.

There is a shuttle service that departs to and from the city at regular intervals from 6 am to 6 pm. These can be boarded just outside the airport. Taxis are also available. Although taxi 's are not the most economical option (RMB 150—180 to Xi'an), they are the most convenient, will take you directly to the hotel, and may be the only choice after 6 p.m.

Xi'an is the hub of an extensive highway system. The commute between Xi'an and many large cities, covers 18 provinces and over 300 cities. Bus is a cheap way to travel in China and a good choice for people who is on budget. The Shaanxi Provincial Coach Station (Xi'an long-distance bus line terminal) is located southwest of the railway station. It is wise to buy tickets in advance during the peak period.

A good news for visitors first of all, Xi'an Subway Line 1 is under testing now and will be opened for a trail run this mid-September. At that time, it will be more convenient to travel around the Xi'an City. At present, just Metro Line 2 in operation now.

Subway Line 1: Pass through the city center of Xian from east (Fangzhicheng Stop) to west (Houweizhai Stop). You can take subway to visit Banpo Village and Terracotta Warriors.
Subway Line 2: Across the city center ( Bell Tower ) of Xian from North (Xian North Railway Station Stop) to South (Exhibition Center).

Tips: The present subway enjoys 3 kinds of tickets for passengers: RMB 2, RMB 3 and RMB 4 tickets. If you plan to stay in Xi'an for a long period, it is advised to buy a rechargeable Changan Tong Card(Subway Card) which offers a 10% discount.


By Bus

It is convinent take a bus in Xi'an city, the bus could reach every attractions you want to visit. For example, Bus 306 to Terracotta Warrior. A one way ticket only costs RMB 7. And the regular buses within the city cost RMB 1 (RMB 2 for air-conditioned, marked with a snow-flake) no matter how far you go.


By Taxi

Based on different vehicle types, flag-down fare in Xian is either RMB 6 or 8 for first 2 km and RMB 1.5 or 2.4 is charged for every additional km from 06:00-23:00. And the base fare rises to RMB 7 or RMB 9, as well as surcharge is RMB 1.8 or 2.7 for each extra km from 23:00 to 06:00 next morning.

Tips: 16:00-17:00 is the shift exchange hour, it's possible hard to hail a taix during this time.

By Bike
Fortunately Xian's main attractions and scenary (except Terracotta Warriors) are bunched fairly close together, so renting a bike is a good option. Be wary of the narrow streets and cars that squeeze you out of the way.
