Why organized Panda Volunteering Program?
2008 Chinese earthquake in Wenchuan county heavily devastated the HOME of Giant
Panda. Countless rocks, crashing down from nearby mountains, loomed over the panda
living areas and destroyed hundreds of patchs of bamboos. Great efforts have been
made to rescue this endangered species, and at present only approximately 1,600
pandas are existing in Chengdu Province. While saving this lovely creature truly
needs more perseverance. Bifengxia Panda Base, a new base relocated from
world-famous Wolong Panda Base, now calls for volunteers from home and
abroad to take a part in safeguarding the lives of its pandas.
What will I do in the base if I joined ?
Spending
several days with panda in Bifengxia Base provides you, your family and your children
with unique experience, and that will be so special and memorable in your life.
You will work together with the staff in the base in same uniform during their working
hours. Commonly volunteers activities include preparing the food for the pandas
(such as apples, panda bread, carrots, bamboo), cleaning their enclosures and accompany
them when needed. Volunteers can gain comprehensive knowledges about the giant panda
and unique breeding experience. Occasionally volunteers are asked to help in providing
medical care for the pandas and do some related research.

The room supplies LCD TV, 24-hour hot water, free drinking water with no fridge in room. Kindly remember that you'd better bring a power converter (110V to 220V) for adapting your laptop and cellphone, etc. Three meals per day are provided, including chinese & western style breakfast (milk, toast, coffee, tea, noodles) and typicall chinese lunch and dinner, consisting of local dishes, rice, noodles, vegetables and some meat. In addition, many interesting activities in the afternoon, such as Chinese lesson, cultural explanation, cooking activities, Chinese dumpling making, are held to intrigue you. Also many DVDs about the Pandas are available so that the participants can watch in leisure time.
FAQs of Panda Volunteer Tour
Any restriction on my physical condition ?
Volunteers should be in good condition both physically and mentally, and the work in the base is not strenuous. If any problem, you could call for 24-hour local support.
Any shops in the base ?
Several small grocery stores are in and around the Panda base. While if you want to go for supermarket or big stores, you need to go to the nearest city, Ya'an, which is approx 20 minutes by taxi from the base.
Any communication facilities in the base ?
Free PC's / internet access and free wi-fi facilities are available at the on-site Information Centre during the hours of 8am to 12 noon and 1pm to 4pm. There are also many internet cafes in Ya'an city (approx 2 Yuan/hour).
What can I do with my free time ?
After you have completed your normal daily duties of cleaning, feeding etc., there is a fair bit of free time. After all, pandas, being wild animals also like their own space! To occupy yourself, please note the following facilities / activities are available on-site:
- Mahjong games
- Free Chinese language lessons available when required
- Paper Craft
- Chinese Calligraphy
- Learn to sing one Chinese song
- Free walking in the Panda Reserve
- Volunteer Center - this is a general area where most volunteers will take time to relax or chat.
- Tour in Ya'an - shopping & trying hot-pot (the famous local cuisine)
- Chinese dumpling making
- Culture lesson
There is also a bar/common room in the hotel and there is a TV area.
Bifengxia Panda Base is situated in 8 kilometers from Ya'an City, 150 kilometers
from Chengdu. It is the first scenic spot integrating natural scenic spot
and eco-zoo in China, including leisure, vacation, sightseeing, and entertainment,
and it is an amazing place where you can immerse yourself totally. Since opening,
it has homed many famous giant pandas. Here embraces the U.S.-born Hua Mei
and Mei Sheng, who were relocated from Wolong Panda Reserve. On
February 5, 2010, Bifengxia became home to Tai Shan, who was born at the
Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington D.C. Later that year,
Su Lin and Zhen Zhen from the San Diego Zoo were also
moved here. Both facilities are managed by the China Conservation and Research Center
for the Giant Panda.
This week has been amazing!! I love the pandas - they are so cute. I can't believe how fast the week has gone though, everybody's so friendly and the pandas can be so funny. It's a once in a lifetime experience I will never forget. Fiona, Scotland 
How to get there ?
The program starts from Sunday, and on that day our English-speaking guide will meet you at Chengdu Airport at scheduled time, and transfer to Chengdu city (1 hour). You will be settled in Traffic Inn Chengdu, then enjoy free time of the rest day. On Monday you will have a full day of sightseeing in Chengdu. On Tuesday, you will be escorted to Bifengxia Panda Base (3 hours).
* If you arrive in Chengdu earlier than our scheduled time, kindly note that you will take all costs (incl. hotel, sightseeing and dining) at your expense before Sunday.
