Located in Fufeng County, Famen Temple is about 110km (68.35mi) from Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province. With a history of over 1700 years, Famen Temple is regarded as the ancestor of pagoda temples in Guanzhong area (Central Shaanxi Plain). Famen Temple was first built in late Eastern Han Dynasty (A.D. 25-220), and reached its zenith in Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907), when it was honored as "The Imperial Temple".

Famen Temple stands out especially for its storing of Buddhist relics, including a true finger bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha. It is one of the true Buddhist relics in the world that have literature and tablet inscription records, top relic of Buddhist world. With the true relics of Buddha, Famen Temple has beccome a Holy Land of Buddhist pilgrimage.

Buddhist Relics in Underground Palace

The , where the Buddhist finger bone was discovered, has now turned to a museum and contains some other relics. One of the best preserved is a gilt silver tea set, which was said to be one of the earliest royal tea sets ever discovered.

A treasure trove was discovered in Famen Temple in 1987, including four Buddhist relics, 121 pieces of gold and silver articles which were once used for Buddhist worship in the temple, 400 pieces of colored glaze and other relics.
