Overhanging Great Wall


As an extension of the Great Wall and one component of the Jiayuguan military defense system, Overhanging Great Wall lies 8km northwest from the Jiayuguan Fort, connecting Jiayuguan Pass with Black Mountain. First built in the year of 1539 during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), Overhanging Great Wall nowadays houses a main path, battlements, 3 towers and only 750 meters wall remaining.

With an impressive shape like a dragon overhanging the slope, it was constructed on a 45-degree ridge; hence it is called Overhanging Great Wall. Since it looks Badaling Great Wall in Beijing with majestic and magnificent appearance, Overhanging Great Wall is also called 鈥渢he Western Badaling Great Wall鈥?

Made of gravel and yellow earth, Overhanging Great Wall occupies the dangerous precipice and extensive desert, and silently tells about the historical stories. Take a stroll along the stairs leading to the city walls, from flat part to steep part, and you can get a bird's eye view of the stretching desert, the oasis of Jiayuguan in the near ground, and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.
